Traveling in the United States without mobile data is hard. You need maps for driving, ride-hailing with Uber or Lyft, restaurant reservations, mobile tickets for shows and parks, and in many places parking is paid through an app.

Roaming with a non-US plan can be expensive, and US prepaid SIM cards often cost more than visitors expect. A travel eSIM is installed before your trip and activated on landing, so you can book a ride right after baggage claim. Also heading to Canada or Mexico? A North America eSIM covers all three countries. The comparison below shows USA plans with fixed data as well as unlimited options.

Mobile networks and coverage in the USA

The three national carriers are AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile US. Travel eSIMs mostly run on AT&T or T-Mobile, and some switch between them automatically. Verizon is less common for travel eSIMs but traditionally strong in rural areas.

4G and 5G coverage is excellent in cities and along the interstates. T-Mobile leads on 5G in metro areas, while AT&T offers broad coverage outside cities too. National parks are a different story: Yosemite Valley, Grand Canyon Village and the main Yellowstone hubs usually have signal around visitor centers and lodges, but many trails and scenic drives do not. Death Valley, much of southern Utah and remote parts of Montana and Wyoming have large dead zones.

If your plan supports multiple networks, your phone will choose the strongest signal automatically, which is a real advantage on road trips.

How much data do you need in the USA?

US trips tend to be long and data-hungry. For a two to three week road trip with daily navigation, hotel searches and social media, 10 to 20 GB works well. A one-week New York City break often needs only 5 GB.

  • City break (5 to 7 days): 3 to 5 GB
  • Two-week road trip: 10 to 20 GB
  • Streaming, hotspot or remote work: unlimited

Unlimited plans are popular for the USA, but many apply a fair-use limit after which speeds are reduced. Check the details in the comparison, and see How much data do I need? for help estimating.

Setup and practical tips for the USA

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly, then switch it on when you land. Step-by-step instructions: iPhone and Android. Make sure your phone is unlocked and on our list of eSIM compatible phones.

Download offline maps for national parks and long desert drives before you leave town. Gas stations in remote areas can be far apart, and so can cell towers.

Most travel eSIMs are data-only and do not include a US phone number. That is fine for maps, messaging and ride-hailing, but some restaurants, rental counters and apps ask for a number for texts. Keep your home SIM active for your bank's verification codes, and use WhatsApp or FaceTime for calls home. Not sure whether an eSIM beats your carrier's roaming? Read eSIM vs roaming.

FAQ: eSIM for the USA

Does eSIM work in the USA?

Yes. The USA has some of the widest travel eSIM support in the world. Plans usually run on AT&T or T-Mobile, and you need an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone.

Which eSIM is best for the USA?

It depends on your trip. For a city break, a smaller fixed-data plan is often enough; for long road trips, look at larger or unlimited plans, ideally with access to more than one network. Compare current plans in the table above.

Is there cell service in US national parks?

Around visitor centers, lodges and some main roads, yes. Many trails, canyons and remote roads have no coverage at all, so download offline maps in advance.

Do I get a US phone number with a travel eSIM?

Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Some providers offer plans with a number, but for most visitors data plus messaging apps is enough.

Can I use one eSIM for the USA and Canada?

Yes. Many providers sell North America plans that cover the USA, Canada and often Mexico. These are handy for cross-border road trips.

Is an unlimited eSIM worth it in the USA?

If you stream, use hotspot or work remotely, often yes. Check the fair-use policy, as many unlimited plans slow down after a daily or total threshold.
