Tanzania combines some of Africa's best wildlife viewing in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire with Kilimanjaro and the beaches of Zanzibar. In between you need data for messaging with your tour operator, sharing photos and checking flight times for domestic connections.

Local SIMs need biometric registration with your passport. A travel eSIM is installed at home and activates when you land in Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. Combining your trip with Kenya? See our Kenya eSIM page as well.

Mobile networks and coverage in Tanzania

Tanzania has four main operators: Vodacom Tanzania, Airtel Tanzania, Yas (formerly Tigo) and Halotel. Travel eSIMs typically use Vodacom or Airtel.

Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi and Stone Town have good 4G. On Zanzibar, coverage is good along most of the coast, including Nungwi, Kendwa and Paje. In the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, signal is available in some areas, mainly near lodges, ranger posts and on higher ground, but long game drives often pass through dead zones.

On Kilimanjaro, you will find occasional signal at certain camps and viewpoints depending on the route, but you should not rely on it. Your guide team usually carries a phone or radio for emergencies.

How much data do you need in Tanzania?

On safari and on the mountain you are often offline anyway, so data usage stays low. For a 10 to 14 day trip with safari and Zanzibar, 5 GB is often enough for messaging and photos. If you plan video calls or remote work on Zanzibar, choose 10 GB or more.

  • Safari only (4 to 7 days): 2 to 3 GB
  • Safari plus Zanzibar (2 weeks): 5 to 10 GB
  • Longer beach stay with streaming: 15 GB+

For more detail, see How much data do I need?.

Setup and practical tips for Tanzania

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly, then switch it on when you land. Step-by-step instructions: iPhone and Android.

Before heading into the parks, download offline maps and save your operator's emergency numbers. Charge your phone and power bank whenever you can, as tented camps often run on solar power with limited charging hours.

Travel eSIMs are data-only, so you will not get a Tanzanian number. Most tour operators, drivers and hotels communicate via WhatsApp, which works fine with mobile data. Mobile money services like M-Pesa need a registered local SIM.

FAQ: eSIM for Tanzania

Does eSIM work in Tanzania?

Yes. Tanzania is covered by many travel eSIM providers, including on Zanzibar. Install the eSIM before you fly on an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone.

Is there cell service in the Serengeti?

In some areas, mostly near lodges and ranger posts. Expect long stretches without signal during game drives and download offline maps in advance.

Can I get signal on Kilimanjaro?

Sometimes, at certain camps and viewpoints depending on the route. Coverage is unreliable, so treat any signal on the mountain as a bonus.

Does my Tanzania eSIM work on Zanzibar?

Yes. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, and plans for Tanzania normally include it. Coverage is good along most of the coast.

Which network is best in Tanzania?

Vodacom and Airtel have the widest coverage. In remote safari areas, coverage depends more on location than on the network.
